Courtney and Kevin
I love when my couples come to me with a particular idea in mind for their engagement sessions with me. Sometimes its on a farm, where they want to be relaxed and rustic, and sometimes it’s not. And “not” is exactly what Courtney and Kevin wanted for theirs! These lovebirds knew what they wanted from the start, and I knew the perfect place to make it happen: Princeton University. Then add some sassy dresses, heels galore and a three-piece suit? I was so excited to shoot these two as soon as I saw them! Read on to see how our session went…
The minute I spoke to Courtney and Kevin, I knew we’d have a fantastic time working together! They were thoughful, creative, and knew what they wanted. And that came through in every aspect of their engagement session. From their attire to Courtney’s DIY signage, everything was perfectly them!
Courtney’s attire was classy and had just that extra amount of sass that made the shoot at Princeton University exactly what she wanted: a bit different then what she and Kevin are planning for the wedding, yet perfectly them. When they arrived, she was in a sleeveless, short, mock turtleneck black dress by Aqua from Bloomingdales, with this super awesome metallic mauve heels by Kelly & Katie, only available at DSW. Kevin complimented her perfectly in his black, three piece suit by Calvin Klein. Sass and class: I loved it! For her second outfit, Courtney changed into a short, strapless white dress, with this stunningly intricate gold applique that wrapped around the bodice by Lilly Pulitzer, her “go to” designer. She paired this dress perfectly with gold tassel stiletto heels by Badgley Mischka, and finished the entire ensemble with earrings and a necklace by Kate Spade New York. Kevin even changed it up a bit by changing his tie from a burgundy patterned one (that he wore to compliment Courtney’s black dress) to a solid black one so as to compliment the white and gold dress perfectly as well!
While Courtney and Kevin looked amazing for their engagement session, Princeton University made a magical setting for their session to take place. Not only because of the history of the school and the town, but the architecture is to die for. The buildings are so unique in their makeup that the opportunities for amazing shots exist pretty much everywhere on campus. The campus embodied everything that Courtney and Kevin were not only looking for, but embodied and encircled them as well. I mean, just look at their photos….
We had so much fun together during their engagement shoot, and I cannot wait for their wedding! Courtney and Kevin were perfect in picking every aspect of their engagement shoot: the location, their attire, and even their DIY signage. I know as a photographer, I could not have asked for a better couple! I can only guess as to what these lovebirds have planned for their wedding day, and I’m sure I’m not the only person who cannot wait to see it all on their big day!
How did you two meet?
We met through a mutual friend. Kevin was visiting his friend from back home, who was my neighbor and good friend at Fairfield University. It was at a stoplight party (wear a green shirt – go / yellow- proceed with caution / red – in a relationship). The party was not designed to be a mixer per se, just in a series of college parties we were trying to diversify the various party themes. I saw Kevin standing in the corner and thought, he is very handsome and awkward, which I found appealing as someone who finds comfort in Excel spreadsheets. I asked one of my friends who he was, since I hadnt seen him at any of our group get togethers before, and he walked me right over and introduced me. It has been a decade of knowing each other ever since! We actually have a picture from the night we met in our green shirts 🙂
Describe the proposal
For years Kevin and I would go to Jones Winery in Shelton CT. Whether by ourselves, or with our friends, it was always a great time, fantastic wine, and a place filled with wonderful memories for us. It was the place of one of our first dates and the place for our favorite dates over the years. In addition to the winery, for years we also would get our pumpkins from Jones Pumpkin Patch (little known fun fact: groom is quite the artful pumpkin carver), which also held great memories over many years.
We were walking through the pumpkin patch with some of our friends and I was wondering to myself how deep into the patch we were going (Kevin is pretty quick to decide on a pumpkin). As we were reaching the end of the grounds, Kevin started talking to me about our relationship and I look over and he was already on one knee! Our friends were staggered in the patch taking pictures and ready to celebrate with some champagne! I was completely surprised and I am a very very hard person to surprise (I always sleuth and figure things out!). We then left the pumpkin patch and proceeded to Jones Winery to celebrate with a private tasting of all of our favorite wines from there. Was such a wonderful, perfect proposal in a place so sentimental and special to us.
What are you most excited about for your wedding? (Vows, dances, party, etc.)
We are most excited about having so many people we love in one room celebrating us. We are very excited for our first dance, and I am really looking forward to spending time with my dad that day, both in getting ready to walk down the aisle and for our father/daughter dance.
